Welcome to the official site for the Central Utah Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project. Founded in 2008, the CUWP works with teachers in the central Utah area, helping them improve their writing instruction through Summer Institutes, workshops, book clubs, and other professional development offerings.
The Central Utah Writing Project sponsors an annual summer institute where teachers who are interested in writing and writing pedagogy come together for three weeks of insightful instruction and reflection. During the institute, teachers demonstrate best practice, read and discuss research, and write and respond to others’ writing.
As a participant in a summer institute, you will gather more ideas and better strategies for teaching writing, share in collegial relationships with other teachers, earn credits or profesional development points, and receive some new books and even a cash stipend. The video embedded here, showing comments from some past Summer Institute participants, should help you understand what the Summer Institute is all about and why it's at the heart of the Central Utah Writing Project's efforts to improve writing and writing instruction.
The Central Utah Writing Project Sponsors a number of professional development opportunities for teachers. We invite your participation in any of our Saturday Workshops, Mini-Conferences, or Open Insitutes. Our workshops feature national and local writing experts who share their insights and ideas for teaching students how to be better, more engaged writers. Whether you attend a Saturday workshop or an open Institute, you can expect to come away with concrete ideas for improving your writing instruction.
Announcements regarding upcoming professional development opportunities are available on our Professional Development page. Additionally, you can subscribe to the CUWP calendar to keep you in-the-know about upcoming events. And you can register for any of our professional development opportunies from our registration page.
CUWP Book Group
Our previous book group met and discussed the book Less is More by Kimberly Campbell. We will be starting up a new round of book group meetings soon and hope you'll consider joining us! Watch this space for more information about upcoming book club titles and meeting times and locations.
Please note that free copies of the books for our book groups are provided on the condition that you agree to attend the dinner for the discussion. If you are unable to attend, we would ask that you either return the book or pay for a replacement. Individuals are also expected to pay for their own dinners at the Brick Oven.
